Grace Lutheran Church
We welcome all to our church to worship, learn, participate, fellowship, and grow in their spiritual lives. Our regular worship service is held each Sunday morning at 10:30, and occasionally we have other special event services or programs.
In November 2010 Trinity Lutheran Church was decommissioned and Grace Lutheran Church was founded as a new mission church associated with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. Deacon Steve Meier served as leader of the newly formed church group. For a brief time after the founding of the new church, the congregation of Grace Lutheran Church meet in Bristol, Virginia, in a banquet room at a local hotel. Soon a decision was made to purchase a small church building, and Grace Lutheran Church was moved to its present location at 338 Lowland Street in Abingdon, Virginia.
Abingdon was chosen as the home for Grace Lutheran Church due to the lack of a presence of a Missouri Synod affiliated church in the area and because most of the founding congregants lived nearby. Grace Lutheran Church operates under the auspices of Concordia Lutheran Church in Kingsport, Tennessee, and Concordia’s Pastor Paul Becker is the supervising pastor for Deacon Steve. We are the sister church of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Grace Lutheran Church is backed by the Central Appalachian Lutheran Ministry (C.A.L.M.) which provides guidance and support to our mission.
We accept and preach the Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The teaching of Luther and the reformers can be summarized in three precepts:
- God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.
- By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
- The Bible is God’s inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine.
Our goal at Grace Lutheran Church is to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior; to minister to our community by helping the hungry, needy and afflicted; and to grow in numbers as a congregation so that someday we may call an ordained pastor to serve us. We invite you to come join us and be part of our mission.
